The Simpsons Spur Other Search Engine Traffic

By Li Evans

Homersimpson Every year, for the past 18, The Simpsons have their annual "Treehouse of Horrors" Episode.  There is three separate stories in one episode each Halloween.  This year of course was no different, but what was interesting was how The Simpsons' episodes affected search traffic on the web.

According to Yahoo!'s Buzz Log blog, searches for "golem" and "what is a golem" surged upwards because of one of those 3 episodes which focused around this mystical being that comes from Jewish folklore.

I think what's also intriguing about this data is that traffic surged upwards of 96% for the Simpsons that day, with 37% coming from the under 17 crowd.  Think about that, that 37% weren't even a twinkle in their parents' eyes when the first episode of the Simpsons first aired.  That says a lot about how our children utilize technology as well as the staying power of this cartoon sitcom.
