DMOZ - Might There Be Life Again?
Carsten Cumbrowski is reporting on both Search Engine Journal and Revenews that DMOZ is accepting submissions again. If you were ever in the queue before and were waiting (visions of Ferris Beuller's Day off are now dancing in my head) to get included for what has seemed like an eternity, now might just be a great time to resubmit.
DMOZ has been having issues since October, we first reported about that back in the beginning of November. A few weeks ago (around Dec. 18th), supposedly DMOZ was back and website owners were able to submit their sites for inclusion within the Open Directory Project. That that might have been a little misleading. Because, as Carsten reports, only now are editors able to work with the submissions, apparently that feature just came back online within the last 24 hours.
This will be interesting to watch. Will this nearly 4-month snafu make DMOZ better? A lot of people have been predicting the death of the directory (and now Mark Twain has walked into the Ferris Beuller visions). I'm not so sure of its death, but I think perhaps the "top tier" search engines are going to be taking a much closer look at DMOZ's authority value.
The reliability of DMOZ is certainly in question. Why? Because its been widely reported that the service is wrought with favoritism by "thug like posses" banning sites they don't like and editors "on the take", and now its "reliability" is also in question. Still, a link is a link (as long as its not from a known link farm) and if you don't have one from DMOZ its certainly worth the 10 minutes it might take to submit to it.

I had been waiting to submit a site and then on the 13th ... no more error message. :)
It will be interesting to see how long pass through takes with many waiting the sames as me.

Many people gave up on DMOZ a long time ago (maybe "many" is a strong word, but anyway). Our clients don't know about DMOZ and the sites of ours that are listed (maybe half of our sites) get very little, if any, traffic from DMOZ. I may resubmit a few just for giggles, but I certainly will not be missing any sleep while waiting.
I do hope that they are able to get their stuff fixed, however. I think it began as a great idea. It just lost its way a little.
