Online Marketing Tips Video: Why You Shouldn't Blog

Last week's video was all about blog promotion.  This week I decided to take a bit of a different spin and offer of 4 tips on why you shouldn't start a blog.  There is a lot of excitement around launching a blog or the idea of a blog, but sometimes companies need a bit of a reality check before setting foot into the blogosphere.

Why You Shouldn't Start A Blog - Video Transcript

Hi and welcome back to Tuesday's Tips in Online Marketing.  Today is Tuesday July 1, 2008 and I'm Li Evans of KeyRelevance and Search Marketing Gurus

In last week's edition we talked about tips for promoting your blog.  In this week's edition I'm going to talk about 4 reasons why you shouldn't blog.  So, lets take a look at those reasons, why you really shouldn't start a blog.

Don't Just Blog to Blog

First reason is, you shouldn't blog just because you "think" you should blog.  Just because your competition has a blog or you think its this new fancy, schmancy thing that you should be doing.  You shouldn't just blog to blog.  That's one of the worst reasons you could ever to start a blog, because you aren't really passionate about it then.  You are just doing it because its the new, craziest, new fangled gadget out there to help you with promotion.  If you don't really understand it, and you don't understand the medium, it's not going to help you down the line.

Figure Out Your Blog's Voice First

The next tip in why you shouldn't blog, is if you don't have your voice figured out for your blog.  Is your blog going to be corporate? Is your blog going to be humorous? Is your blog going to talk about your products?  Is it going to be several people talking about different topics in your blog. You want to make sure that you have the voice figured out before you set forth into the blogging world.

You Need to be Passionate About Blogging!

The third tip in why you shouldn't blog is unless you got the interest in blogging.  Unless you've got the interest in blogging.  If you don't have that passion to sit there and write blog posts and communicate with your audience, you shouldn't be blogging.  It'll come through.  It'll come through as bland and boring  and people won't really want to read and they'll be wondering why did this person start a blog in the first place.  Unless you've got the passion or the interest, or your employees have the passion or the interest in blogging, you shouldn't be blogging.

Can You Allocate Resources to Blogging?

And the last tip in why you shouldn't be blogging is if you don't have the resources.  IF you do not have the time to blog at least once or twice a week.  Or you don't have the support or staff to help you actually put content into your blog you're not looking for it to be just yourself.  If you don't have the resources to figure out how to get the editing done on the blog.  All of these things put together to help make blog posts are time and resources, and unless you have that time and that resources and schedule it, you're blog is going to fail, because you are going to put it off and its not going to be as important.  Basically you'll lose your audience. and when you come back and you figure you have the time and resources now, it'll be really hard to get your audience back.
