Liana Evans:
Hi I'm Li Evans of Search Marketing Gurus and KeyRelevance and I'm here at SES Toronto and that is in Canada, of course. I'm here with Kevin Ryan who is the chief overall dude here at Search Engine Strategies. I wanted to ask you a few questions. What do you think the highlights of SES Toronto going to be?
Kevin Ryan:
SES Toronto, in Canada this year. We started this morning with Frederick Marckini who always delivers a great keynote and lots of just spectacular, high level information. We have two keynotes, Frederick and Bryan Eisenberg, who are really just big thought leaders in the space who bring a lot to the table in terms of this is where the industry is heading, this is where we are going. Which kind of lays the foundation for a lot of the very specific tactical sessions that we have during the week that are entirely focused on very practical educational information that you can take back to the office. Then we have one Orion session. Which is another, Orion is kind of another high level, strategic thought, Measuring Success in a Web 2.0 World. This is what most marketers are telling me that they are focusing on in 2008 probably 2009, measuring success.
Liana Evans:
Then you have a Twitter session?
Kevin Ryan:
Oh yeah! I started using Twitter, you know, very simple. There's a Kevin Ryan and there's a Kevin M Ryan, so I'm like yelling at the other Kevin Ryan to stop pulling my twitter users away. Twitter is kind of like a hobby, but I see a lot of people in our business using Twitter. And its just an interesting phenomenon, but I what to know is, is it a tool or is it just something to waste time with? Are people actually seeing results from this? At the end of the day all of these great new technologies are wonderful but if we can't figure out how to monetize them they pretty much die pretty quickly.
Liana Evans:
So with that, that kind of leads into all of these new strategies popping up everyday and is Search Engine Strategies going to move forward talking about all these different new things that come up every 3 months or 6 months you see a new social site or you see a new search tool. Is Search Engine Strategies going to be covering those things more?
Kevin Ryan:
We do. We focus not just on the latest and greatest by the tried and true. So we want to make sure we are giving our audience access to both. So when it comes to things like that I think we noted and Frederick noted in his keynote this morning search is connected to everything. So if everything is connected to search, I think what we have to do when we are profiling these new applications, these new tools that marketers have available to them its very important to show the connection to search, and that's something we do very well.
Liana Evans:
I think you do too. I'm not biased, I think you guys do a great job. So you are doing these awards, these Search Engine Strategies awards in San Jose in August. Can you explain a little bit about that for the audience?
Kevin Ryan:
This is actually not the 10th anniversary of SES but it is the 10th SES. We wanted to do something special to really recognize some of the marketers in the space, the search marketers who are doing really outstanding work. So we have 15 categories that are search centric, one that is an editor's choice award that Kevin Newcomb and I will ultimately choose the winner. For us it just a way to really recognize some of the folks in the business who are doing great things. You can go the SES Awards site or the SES site and submit for an award, anyone can do it.
Liana Evans:
And when is the deadline for that?
Kevin Ryan:
I believe... and you always ask the tough questions, the deadline is 2 weeks before SES San Jose. We have an industry judges panel and the editorial staff at Click Z and Search Engine Watch will decide the finalists and then our judges committee with decide the winners.
Liana Evans:
Thank you very much Kevin for taking the time to talk to us. I am Li Evans at SES Toronto, and of Search Marketing Gurus and Key Relevance. We'll talk to you later, we have some more interviews coming up later.
